The New Era of Data
This week, Youth4Youth taught ESF South Island School students about how a computer works and how it displays text, colours and images. Students were taught the basics of data representation and how data is stored as binary or hexadecimal on computers. They learnt about the processes involved in displaying text on a computer screen, using the ASCII and Unicode character sets. Youth4Youth also taught the students about how computers display images, including concepts like image resolution, pixels, and RGB values using a Digital Colour Meter. Students enjoyed exploring HexEd.it, a software which analyses and edits binary files.
This was a very exciting session which helped expose these young students to the basic concepts involved in the IGCSE Computer Science course that is being offered for the first time this year at South Island School!
